What You Choose – AKA “Indian Love Song” and formerly called “Do What You Want”, by Tina Paraventi. This song had a Native American feel to it from the start. At Jonas’ suggestion I simplified the drums to two thumping floor toms and kick drum. The guitar was enhanced by overdubbing another melodic guitar track for extra interest and the deep and heavily mixed bass track adds to the primal sound. Layered on top are ethereal background vocals (mine added to Maureen’s in unison) wrapping around the lead vocal, with lots of mysterious echo. For percussion a staff of bells was used (such as those worn around the feet of Native American dancers), further adding to the Native American sound. The song is an ode to frustration with the political machine and the desire to change it. Tina’s pretty voice contrasts with her feisty personality -- a melding beauty and power.
In the tradition of folk protest tunes, the aboriginal rhythm drives home a strong point of view, with a multi-layered arrangement anchored by drummer Lisa Marsh's pounding beat. "What you use, what you lose, what you choose to believe. What you cherish and let perish, what remains when you leave."
